"Well Known" but Anonymous Restaurant Seeks Masochistic Manager

http://madison.craigslist.org/fbh/2797298782.html

"Job Title: RESTAURANT MANAGER! * HOT OPPORTUNITY!!* (Madison, WI)
Date: 2012-02-08, 5:17PM CST
Restaurant Assistant Manager

As one of the most well known restaurants in Wisconsin, we believe in having a good time. We strive to provide the best customer service for every patron that walks through our door. Our diverse menu features quality meals, ranging from steaks to seafood. But the success of our restaurants can't be attributed to our food alone; without a talented hourly and management staff we would not be where we are today.

We are an upscale casual full service concept seeking a front of house Manager. Candidates should have:
•3+ years of current casual, full-service experience
•A stable work history; no more than two jobs in the previous six years
•Experience with a high volume national chain is a plus!
•Ability to build sales and rapport in the community
•If you would like to be considered for this position immediately, please forward your resume."

Just like me, you’ve probably noticed that jobs marketed as “big earnings potential” or “hot opportunity” say that because being fairly rewarded for your effort or hours logged is not guaranteed in those positions. This is particularly true for commissioned jobs, but this vacancy is clearly advertising a salaried ASSISTANT restaurant manager job. (The vacancy headline touts the position as top management but comes clean in the third line about being second banana.) So why the hyperbole?

It turns out that it is part sales job, part operations management: The assistant manager is expected to solicit customers "in the community." It would be unclear whether this entails the donning of a mascot costume and holding promotional signs roadside, except the "builds rapport" requirement implies more of a public relations officer role. Just don't expect anyone outside the restaurant proper to take this liaison experience seriously!

Food service is truly one of the top career pits because it's very difficult to be considered qualified for other fields once you've spent any part of your adult life in food service. (Food service managers and employees do have transferable skills -- such as triage capacity, calmness under pressure, and time management -- but most HR departments are either ignorant of this or wholesale deny it.)

The assistant manager must have encountered high turnover for the top manager to require “no more than two jobs in the previous six years.” I suppose recent graduates who completed a series of different internships and/or were laid off from the part-time Work Study jobs they had need not apply. They’re supposed to be capable of white-collar office jobs anyway, but with the high underemployment among today’s college graduates, the requirement is quite spiteful of those who sacrificed years of full-time work potential to earn a higher education.

It’s generally assumed that a restaurant manager wants to keep with the same branch to better know local market idiosyncrasies and demand cycles, a knowledge which often gives the competitive edge necessary to schedule lean staffing; to accurately forecast inventory usage; and to run appropriate promotions to earn regional recognition in sales and/or profit. So -- why move?

Common causes of food service employee turnover include uninformed scheduling (especially understaffing during peak periods) and purchasing insufficient quantities of product (generating many complaints and customer credits when what they want is regularly out of stock). Similarly, managers sometimes change branches because the local market is too hectic and unpredictable for them to coordinate resources because actual conditions run contrary to their planning and hence make the managers look incompetent.

Speaking of which, the lack of hyphenation in compound adjectives preceding nouns, e.g. "well-known restaurant" and "front-of-house manager," makes the vacancy writer look incompetent. Thankfully, he/she properly uses a semicolon, and hence we know that he/she is fully capable of passing English 202.

"Quad Graphics" Docile Food Service Clerk w/ Ability to Withstand Large Pay Inequalities

https://us1.i-grasp.com/fe/tpl_QuadGraphics01.asp?s=QgpRoUZwJhYKpMmYhe&jobid=41057,3468215433&key=18513229&c=879887026576&pagestamp=sezwvlzlwpwrleszps

“Job Title: Food Service Worker (Part-Time)

Job Description: Quad Graphics is seeking a Food Service Worker for to (sic) work within the Quad Cuisine Plant Cafeterias. The Food Service Worker works to efficiently and quickly cook, prepare and serve hot and cold foods. Additional duties include assisting with production plant catering functions including but not limited to cleaning, stocking shelves, washing dishes and pots and pans and/or any tasks assigned by the department supervisor. The position reports to the supervisor and has no supervisory authority.

Qualifications: Successful candidates must have the ability to lift 50 pounds, with or without a reasonable accommodation. Prior food service experience is required. This position also requires a positive attitude and good people skills, while in contact with customers and fellow employees. In addition, the understanding of cash register functions as they relate to entering the customer's orders on a touch screen is also required.

Additional External Text: We offer excellent benefits to eligible employees, including 401(k) and profit sharing plans, holidays, vacations and more.”

Quad keeps the humorous job vacancies coming. The successful applicant will smile and greet employees no matter what, even when those employees brag about their latest big project and supervisory responsibilities, neither of which the food service worker would have. I suppose Quad included that requirement to screen out grumpy people via the classification of a doormat personality as a bona fide KSA. Imagine the following scenario:

Al, the Food Service Worker: “How are you doing today?”

Chuck, the Sales Coordinator: “Excellent. I just closed a $1 billion contract and will get a $500K commission on top of my base salary. Have you closed any deals lately?”

Al: “No, but I’ll close your mouth if you talk down to me again!”

Chuck: “I could have you arrested for uttering a threat. The only thing closing around here is your payroll account after I get the boss to fire you for unprofessional conduct, mouthing off like that.”

So yes, the incumbent must act friendly to those whose professions and salaries make his/her seem insignificant to society and a potential source of loathing. The real kicker is the fleeting mention of the potential benefits package. Note that only “eligible employees” receive those benefits. 99% of the time, part-time employees do not receive any benefits because they are not “eligible.” The lack of an explicit statement of part-time benefits is all one needs to identify any talk of benefits for the PT food worker as misleading at best. And check out that typo in the first sentence ("for to work")!

"Job Title: Restaurant Worker

Job Category: Location: OR - Albany

Will be working in all areas of restaurant, from kitchen (prep and line cook), to dishes to front end. Must pass a pre-employment drug screen and criminal background check."

This restaurant sounds very unsanitary considering how it wants the line cook to also wash dishes and perform "front end" work, which usually involves cash handling. Last time I checked, the National Sanitation Foundation, SafeServ, and the other food service hygiene/safety associations explicitly advised against letting any person handle both food and money, let alone food and dirty dishes, even if the individual washes and sanitizes his/her hands between each activity and uses a new pair of disposable gloves every time he/she resumes handling food or utensils. Are any health inspectors reading that job description? This could be circumstantial evidence in a food poisoning case.

At any rate, the individual hired will go through a lot of hand soap, sanitizer, and gloves. I suppose this is good for drumming up demand for hand moisturizers among food service workers. Sanitizing gel and the powder in nitrile/latex gloves really dry out the skin. The restaurant advertising the vacancy sounds like the kind of place which would make the worker buy his/her own gloves. The front-end duties are purposely vague. I suppose this is to hide the possibility that the hired individual would be expected to also wait tables and hence be classified as an “opportunity” or tipped employee despite doing a majority of back-end work such as washing dishes and cooking.
